Welcome to discovering classes taught in Ghana.

Culture and Health in Africa

Culture and Health in Africa, a summer study abroad class, is the beginning place for this Website and for recording collaborations between IU and Ghana. This course had two purposes: 1. Function as a full study abroad class in Ghana, and 2. Demonstrate to interested IU faculty the process for creating an overseas program.

Students experienced Ghaniaian health care by exploring health facilities, research centers, agricultural and national parks, educational institutions, and cultural events. Faculty joined them in the learning activities as well as prepared materials for presentation during the class. Students and faculty spent 21 days in Ghana, starting in the capital, Accra, then going to Kumassi, Cape Coast, and once again spending time in Accra.

For both students and faculty, it was a life-changing event.

Student Research

Cecilia Obeng, instructor for the course, wanted students to create research projects, conduct research, and the publish their work. Obeng introduced students to the power of qualitative research, encouraging students to talk with Ghanaian people about their lives and health (health needs and healthcare access). Published student research will be posted on this site.

Faculty Development

Faculty who joined this course, created presentations and materials studying a specific part of Ghanaian life and health. Examples of their presentations and materials are shared with registered students. Presenter and topics are listed below.

Margaret Lion - Lecture: Alcohol and drug abuse, and sexually transmitted diseases
